This section begins in Buenos Aires, a bustling city with strong German and Italian influences and home to a world famous opera house and a myriad of architectural genres. The route takes the riders northwest out of the city along the Rio Parana to Rosario, where it then turns inland into the heart of the country, past vast fields of wheat and corn. If there was a geographical centre to Argentina, it would likely be in Cordoba. Located at the foot of the Sierra Chicas, the Sequia River divides the city, which is known for its stunning colonial buildings. Soon, the Andes will be looming on the horizon as the riders spin across the plains and on into San Juan, nicknamed the ‘Oasis Town’ for its pleasant avenues lined with trees and canals. Finally, they will pedal into in Mendoza, the centre of the country’s wine producing region.
After a rest day sampling a glass or two of Mendoza’s famous Malbec, the cyclists will head west towards the Andes. The road climbs up to almost 4000 m in the shadow of Cerro Aconcagua, at 6922 m, the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. This is wild high country and the riders can expect gusting winds, chilly temperatures and, if clear, incredible views. The border crossing into Chile, one of the highest in the world, is at 3200 m. Once across the pass the cyclists will enjoy a twisting ride down the other side of the mountain range on a series of switchbacks, keeping an eye out for the area’s soaring condors. A couple stages later, the riders will pedal into the country’s capital Santiago with its 19th century neo-classical architecture and winding side streets.
